As the crisis in Ukraine continues to escalate, this week on The Agenda, Stephen Cole considers just how we arrived at the current crisis and what it all could mean for the future of Europe and indeed for the global balance of power.

He speaks to Frank Furedi, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Kent, and author of a recent article entitled "Ukraine and the new world disorder" and Jamie Shea, former Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges at NATO Headquarters. In a wide ranging discussion, they cover whether more heed should have been paid to Vladimir Putin's security concerns over NATO expansion, whether the nuclear option is now closer than ever and the role China might play in the geopolitical future.

Also – as the High Commissioner of the UNHCR says the refugee exodus from Ukraine is one of the swiftest he seen in his 40 years working in the sector, Stephen also addresses the internal and external refugee crisis in the region with Kathryn Mahoney, Global Spokesperson for the UNHCR.
