Russian skater cleared to compete, gold for China in freestyle aerials: Olympics update

15-year-old Russian skater Kamila Valieva was cleared to compete despite testing positive for the banned substance trimetazidine on Christmas Day 2021. The Court of Arbitration for Sport, CAS, said that the young skater will be allowed to compete due to the "exceptional circumstances" of her case, justifying its decision with the warning that preventing her from competing while the anti-doping case is ongoing "would cause her irreparable harm."

Valieva won a gold medal last week after landing a historic quad jump, and she also played a key role in bringing her team to victory in the same week. She's expected to win Tuesday's singles event too.

But the International Olympic Committee announced on Monday that there will be no medal ceremony for the women's singles figure skating if Valieva finishes in the top three, and the ceremony for the team event will also be canceled.

"In the interest of fairness to all athletes... it would not be appropriate to hold the medal ceremony for the figure skating team event during the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022," the IOC said.

Xu Mengtao of China won gold in the freestyle skiing women's aerials on Monday, beating defending champion Hanna Huskova of Belarus, and Megan Nick of the United States who took the bronze medal.

Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France won their "unreal" first Olympic gold in the ice dancing competition on Monday, after a disappointing performance in the Pyeongchang Olympics of 2018 - including an unfortunate accident with Papadakis' costume - forced them to settle for silver. The duo, who've been skating together for more than a decade, broke their own world record.

US snowboarders are strongly defending their long-serving head coach Peter Foley against allegations of sexual misconduct and other inappropriate behaviour. Athletes said the accusations are "super upsetting" and damage "team energy." The claims against Foley were made by athlete Callan Chythlook-Sifsof, who in a series of Instagram posts on Friday, alleged the coach had "taken naked photos of female athletes for over a decade."

Marius Lindvik has put an end to Norway's 58-year Olympic ski jumping individual title drought on the Large Hill on Saturday, after narrowly defeating 2018 champion Ryoyu Kobayashi. The 23-year-old Lindvik became the first Norwegian to triumph on the Olympic Large Hill since Toralf Engan at the 1964 Innsbruck Games. "It feels insane. I couldn't imagine it," he said.

The UK men's curling team, considered the best in the world, is one step closer to securing themselves a spot in the semi-finals after beating Switzerland yesterday in a tense match.
