Google and Facebook have been fined a combined $240 million by France's data privacy watchdog.
The CNIL imposed a record $170 million sanction on Google owner Alphabet and $68 million on Facebook's parent company Meta Platforms for failing to allow consumers to easily refuse tracking cookies.
"When you accept cookies, it's done in just one click," said Karin Kiefer, CNIL's head for data protection and sanctions, cited by Reuters. "Rejecting cookies should be as easy as accepting them."
The companies both face additional daily fines if they fail to address the problem within three months.
