Over the past week, visitors to Wroclaw Zoo in Poland were able to see a rare sight – a baby white-cheeked gibbon named Dao.

He is now one of the around 200 white-cheeked gibbons in captivity, according to the zoo.

Only 81 gibbons live in European facilities, though that number is increasing and nine have been born in the past year.

The species is critically endangered, with only between 150 and 160 in the wild, specifically in Vietnam, Laos and China, although they have not been spotted in China for around 30 years.

Dao, who was born in September is just starting to explore his enclosure. And according to Radoslaw Ratajszczak, the director of Wroclaw Zoo, it is one of the best in Europe.

"They can behave naturally here and have peace and quiet. They return the favor with beautiful singing and offspring," he said.
