More than 30,000 people representing around 200 countries from all over the world are traveling to the UK for COP26, with the aim of meeting ambitious climate targets set out in Paris six years ago.

The summit was due to take place last November, but the increasingly urgent need to protect the environment was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

So, as climate champions finally gather in Glasgow, this week The Agenda's Stephen Cole speaks to two of the people in power to hear their passionate pleas for the planet and exactly how they're striving to save it.

Joining Cole from San Jose is Andrea Meza Murillo, Costa Rica's Minister of Environment and Energy, who is one of the driving forces behind the 'Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance,' due to be launched at COP26.

The minister says this is the "decisive decade," with a need to accelerate transformation away from fossil fuels and the need to bring larger countries on board to achieve the aim of de-carbonizing the economy.

Working to save Africa from the effects of climate change is Malawi's Minister of Forestry and Natural Resources, Nancy Tembo, who joins Cole from Lilongwe. She explains how Africa's reliance on agriculture and the necessity to plan is being hampered by unpredictable weather and climate, causing increasing food insecurity.

Although they have established irrigation schemes, water harvesting and landscape restoration, Nancy Tembo says it's not enough, and that large emitting countries should take responsibility and help places like Malawi.
