Moon rocks returned by Chang'e-5 show lunar volcanic activity 2 billion years ago

Two pieces of the lunar volcanic rocks brought back by China's Chang'e-5 mission have been dated as about 1.97 billion years old, making them the youngest volcanic rocks identified on the moon so far, according to international research published in the journal Science.

Torrential rains batter N China's Shanxi

As many as 15 people were killed, and three others are missing after incessant torrential rains triggered flooding in north China's Shanxi Province, authorities said Tuesday.

The 1911 Revolution was a great and arduous exploration, undertaken by the Chinese people and Chinese progressives in a bid to achieve national independence and the people's liberation, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Saturday at a meeting marking the 110th anniversary of the event.

4,800-year-old wooden constructions excavated in central China

Several large wooden structures dating back to the Neolithic era were unearthed at the Jijiaocheng ruins site, a prehistoric cultural site located in Changde City, central China's Hunan Province, according to a briefing on the excavation.

First discovered in 1978, the site used to be an ancient city from the Qujialing culture period (3300 BC-2600 BC) – a Neolithic civilization derived from the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River primarily found in today's Hunan and Hubei provinces.

A remarkable comeback for wildlife in China

Several rare wildlife species whose populations had dwindled over the years, with some on the edge of extinction, have made a remarkable comeback across China.

There have been frequent news reports of sightings of rare wild animals, including wild Asian elephants roaming around human settlements in the southwest, Siberian tigers in the northeast, Chinese mountain cats and crested ibis in the northwest, milu deer in the central regions and Bryde's whales off the coast of Shenzhen in the south.

China to formally establish its first national parks

China on Tuesday announced it would formally establish its first batch of national parks.

Sanjiangyuan National Park, Wuyi Mountain National Park, Giant Panda National Park, Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park and Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park are among the parks on the list. The protected land area is 230,000 square kilometers and they cover nearly 30 percent of the key terrestrial wildlife species found in China.

National Day holiday box office hits 4b yuan, second highest in history

China's seven-day National Day holiday (October 1-7) ended with its domestic box office revenue exceeding 4.384 billion yuan ($680 million), the second-highest during the same period in Chinese film history after that of 2019, according to the country's online movie-ticketing platform Maoyan.

End of price-controls on coal power

China has announced it will fully liberalize pricing for electricity generated from coal in an effort to ensure sufficient power supplies amid the recent large-scale power shortages.

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said in a statement that all electricity generated from coal-fired power will be priced through market transactions, and all industrial and commercial users should buy electricity at market prices.
