The leader of Germany's conservative party, Armin Laschet, has offered to step down from his post, local media reported. 

Armin Laschet, the head of Angela Merkel's CDU, said his party needed a fresh start after it received its worst-ever results in September's general elections.

During that election, the CDU-CSU alliance won second place with only 21.4 percent of the vote. The liberal FDP party won 25.7 percent. 

In a call, Laschet told CDU lawmakers that he would help moderate the process of finding his successor, according to Reuters.

Laschet will give a statement at the CDU's headquarters at 6:30 p.m. local time.
