She strode up the catwalk at the same pace as the models. Given the fashion industry's penchant for co-opting radical messages, she could almost have been part of the show.

But the woman carrying the banner at the Louis Vuitton fashion show in Paris's famous Louvre museum on Tuesday was a protester, calling out excessive consumption in the fashion industry and condemning its impact on climate change.

She marched to the end of the catwalk with a banner declaring "Overconsumption = extinction" and bearing the logos of Youth for Climate, Amis de la Terre France and Extinction Rebellion.

Perhaps the security staff even thought she was supposed to be there, because it wasn't until she had posed for the cameras and started walking back that they wrestled the protester to the ground, seized the banner and took her away. The chaos lasted 40 seconds. 

About 30 people planned the protest, including members from Extinction Rebellion, Friends of the Earth and Youth For Climate. Two were arrested in connection to the incident.

The groups say the Paris government should immediately cut production levels in the fashion sector, citing that "42 items of clothing were sold per person in France in 2019."
