England soccer captain Harry Kane has put an end to speculation linking him with a record-breaking move to Manchester City by confirming he will stay at Tottenham Hotspur this year.
Kane, who has three years left on a contract with the North London club, had told his employers he wanted to leave earlier this summer and had been the target of a $137 million bid from Premier League champions Manchester City.
Reports in the UK media said City were preparing to increase their offer to $206 million before the August 31 deadline for buying players, which would have smashed the UK transfer record.
Kane who has spent his entire professional career at Tottenham broke the news on Twitter: "I will be staying at Tottenham this summer and will be 100 percent focused on helping the team achieve success."
Kane is the second-highest scorer in Tottenham's history, with 221 goal and told supporters: "It was incredible to see the reception from the Spurs fans on Sunday and to read some of the messages of support I've had in the last few weeks."
Had Tottenham accepted a bid for Kane it would have smashed the transfer fee record paid by a British club that was only set this summer. Jack Grealish's move to Manchester City from Aston Villa cost $137 million.
The world record is held by Paris Saint Germain, which paid an eye-watering $271.7 million to release Brazilian Neymar from his contract at Barcelona in 2017.
Tottenham head coach Nuno Espirito Santo was delighted to have secured the services of Kane, one of Europe's most prolific strikers, telling a news conference: "We are all very happy. He's one of the best players in the world so we are delighted to have one more option to the season ahead of us.
"It's finished, Harry's going to be with us. He worked today and he's an option for tomorrow. It's fantastic news for everybody."
