Tens of thousands of people hit the streets in Copenhagen this weekend to participate in the largest Pride march since the pandemic began. It was part of WorldPride, which takes place in a different city every two years. The last event was in New York in 2019.

Since last year, over 200 Pride marches were canceled because of the pandemic.

This year's events took place in Copenhagen and Sweden's Malmo, just 40 kilometers apart, between August 12 and 22, 2021. On Saturday, to decrease the chance of spreading COVID-19, the parade was broken into six marches that met in Copenhagen's largest park.

In addition to celebrating the cities' LGBT+ community, participants also expressed their solidarity with the LGBT+ community living in Afghanistan. Francesco Segala, who was at the march, told Reuters that he was thinking about gay men having to hide from the Taliban since last week.

Between 1996 to 2001, the last time the Taliban was in power, there were reports of gay men being sentenced to death. "We will fight for you. You are not alone, and we will continue to fight for you – and please be yourself," he said.
