Huawei revenue plunges

Chinese tech giant Huawei's revenue plunged 29 percent in the first half of 2021, according to the company's earnings report released Friday.

Huawei is at the center of an intense U.S.-China trade and tech rivalry after the government of former President Donald Trump labeled it a security risk.

The U.S. has provided no evidence of spying but has barred Huawei from acquiring technologies crucial to its operations such as microchips and cut it off from using Google's Android operating system.

Overzealous fan culture

Chinese authorities have called for tougher measures to rectify distorted fan culture and build healthy and rational online fandom in China.

The call came after the recent detention of Kris Wu, a 30-year-old Chinese-Canadian pop star, in Beijing for suspected rape.

The arrest set off a social media storm, with netizens taking different sides. While thousands of netizens took to Twitter-like platform Weibo to demand an impartial inquiry and justified punishment, some die-hard fans of the accused went as far as expressing their wish of visiting him in jail.

Chinese students fight U.S. visa restrictions

Chinese students, researchers and families are scrambling to deal with U.S. visa restrictions that continue Trump-era policies.

In May 2020, the White House announced that certain Chinese graduate students and researchers associated with entities in China that implement or support China's military-civil fusion strategy would be prevented from entering the U.S. under the F or J non-immigrant visa. An analysis report by the Center for Security and Emerging Technology found that the proclamation so far may have affected 3,000 to 5,000 Chinese students.
