Dolphins have returned to the Tagus River in Lisbon, Portugal, delighting marine biologists and tourists.
Biologist Ines Matado said dolphins had previously appeared occasionally but were now being seen every day, with the pandemic lockdown being credited for the change by cutting pollution.
"Here, there was a reduction of noise pollution as well as the amount of boats in the water since last year, at the time of COVID-19, and all this helped the dolphins to be more present," she said.
Leanor Sardinha, one of those enjoying a boat trip to see the dolphins, said her father had told her that dolphins had been in the Tagus at the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s, "but in the meantime they had disappeared."
After witnessing the dolphins swimming alongside the boat, her verdict was: "Absolutely fabulous, I have no words."
