Budapest 'ready' if final moved from Wembley: Euro 2020 round-up
Alex Hunt

UEFA has a contingency plan to replace Wembley as host for the Euro 2020 final unless fans are exempted from 10-day quarantine rules. It said in a statement "there is always a contingency plan but we are confident that the final week will be held in London."

•  Tournament organizers have been in negotiations since the UK postponed plans to end COVID-19 restrictions next week. The semi-finals and final are due to take place before the July 19 date, which is the new target date for the end of restrictions.

• There have been reports in the UK that UEFA wants its officials to be exempt from the self-isolation rules travelers to the UK currently have to follow. Reuters says discussions are ongoing about "using a strict testing and bubble concept" and stays of less than 24 hours in the UK.

• Meanwhile, Hungary's Football Federation, where four Euro 2020 matches are being hosted with full crowds, said its focus was "on hosting the four Budapest matches" but it "stands ready to host any high-level football event."

Moscow has closed its Euro 2020 fan zone and banned gatherings of more than 1,000 people because of the recent sharp rise in COVID-19 cases, the mayor of the Russian capital said on Friday. "I didn't want to do this, but we have to," Sergei Sobyanin wrote.

• Russia's second city St Petersburg, the country's worst COVID-19 hotspot after Moscow, is hosting seven matches, including a quarter-final. It tightened restrictions, with a ban on food sales in fan zones, earlier this week.

Players from Denmark and Belgium, and fans of both teams, put on a show of unity when they paused their match after 10 minutes, in recognition of Christian Eriksen (he wears the number 10 shirt) who continues to recover in hospital after his cardiac arrest during Denmark's first match on Saturday.

•  "The only thing I'm disappointed by is the result, I didn't expect much from this game, but I can't describe the pride I feel about this squad," said Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand. "Four days after almost losing one of their best friends, they get up and they play such a game, it's just amazing."

German football fans are being warned to skip any Euro 2020 matches in the UK even if Germany makes it to the final stages. Chancellery Minister Helge Braun said the spread of the Delta variant was a "great concern," because fans would risk bringing the more contagious strain back to Germany. "You shouldn't travel to virus variant areas," he said.

FRIDAY'S FIXTURES:

Sweden vs Slovakia: 13:00 GMT

Croatia vs Czechia: 16:00 GMT

England vs Scotland: 19:00 GMT

THURSDAY'S RESULTS:

Denmark 1- 2 Belgium

Half-time substitute Kevin De Bruyne inspired Belgium to a 2-1 victory over Denmark in Copenhagen, securing a place in the Euro 2020 knockout stage. The match was marked by fans and players showing their support for Christian Eriksen.

Yussuf Poulsen had given Denmark an early lead, but De Bruyne helped Thorgan Hazard to equalize before scoring the winner with 20 minutes left.

Ukraine 2-1 North Macedonia

Andriy Shevchenko's Ukraine team bounced back from defeat by the Netherlands to beat North Macedonia. First half goals came from Andriy Yarmolenko and Roman Yaremchuk.

North Macedonia pulled a goal back when Ezgjan Alioski tucked away the rebound after his penalty was saved. Ukraine held on to win, which brought to an end the worst losing run at the tournament (a record shared with the former Yugoslavia).

Netherlands 2-0 Austria

The Netherlands made it through to the last 16 knockout stages of Euro 2020 after a second straight win. Memphis Depay's penalty, awarded after a video review of David Alaba's foul on Denzel Dumfries, set up a 2-0 win over Austria.

Dumfries added another midway through the second half in the match played in the Johan Cruyff Arena. It's the first major tournament the country, which was once a giant in international football, has qualified for since the 2014 World Cup and the men in orange appear to be enjoying themselves.

Despite the defeat, Austria still has a good chance of qualifying from the group stages with a crunch match against Ukraine to come.
