Danish football star Christian Eriksen is "awake" in hospital after collapsing on the pitch in Denmark's Euro 2020 game against Finland on Saturday, the country's football association has said.

In a post on Twitter, the Danish Football Union said "Christian Eriksen is awake and is undergoing further tests" at the hospital.

Eriksen is the star of the Denmark team and is one of Europe's most celebrated footballers.

The 29-year-old creative midfielder plays for Inter Milan in Italy - he joined them in 2020 after being a key player for Tottenham in England's Premier League for seven years. His early years were with Ajax in Holland.

He collapsed on the pitch, while no-one was around him, towards the end of the first half of the game in Copenhagen.

Television pictures showed Danish players nearby rushing to help him, while medical staff were immediately called on and rushed on to the pitch to tend to Eriksen, performing emergency CPR.

His team mates, many in tears, formed a circle around the medics as they worked.

After around 15 minutes Eriksen was stretchered off the field followed by the rest of the Denmark team, while Finland's players also left the pitch.

Euro 2020 is the football competition for European national teams, and is normally held every four years - last year's event was postponed for a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
