Thursday marks the 28th anniversary of the racist murder of British teenager Stephen Lawrence, now recognized in Britain as Stephen Lawrence Day.

Lawrence was 19 years old when he was stabbed to death in a random, racially motivated attack by fellow teenagers. But his murder, and the investigation into it, opened up a national debate on institutional racism that is still being had today.

The Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation works in communities and schools to educate the next generation about racism, equality, and "creating a fairer society."

"Through Stephen Lawrence Day, we want young people to be inspired about what they can achieve in their own lives, whether in their classroom, their community or a career. We want them to get involved in creating the kind of community they want to live in and we want them to have a strong voice in building a fairer and more inclusive society," the charity said.

The Foundation published a video featuring celebrities, politicians, broadcasters, musicians and activists reading a poem that linked Lawrence's murder and the subsequent public outrage – much of it directed at the police – with modern day "Black Lives Matter" protests and conversations about policing in much of Europe and North America.
