Monkeys and meerkats put on their game faces along with other animals as they took part in this year's Easter egg hunt at London Zoo.

There was no monkeying about as they tracked down the colorfully painted papier-mache eggs with treats inside that had been hidden away by dedicated staff. 

Black-capped squirrel monkeys and meerkats rushed to extract the gifts that were in eggs hanging from branches in their enclosures.

The hunt for the eggs is an Easter tradition, although this year no guests were there to see the animals enjoying themselves.

"After what has felt like a particularly long winter, Easter is finally approaching and the warm weather is making a comeback – making it the perfect time to put on an egg hunt for the animals to enjoy," said animal manager Angela Ryan.

"The squirrel monkeys were particularly keen on hunting for snacks inside their Easter baskets and, while there were plenty of treat-filled eggs to go round, that didn't stop a few of the meerkats getting protective over their Easter hoard – something that may be familiar to other households this Sunday."

Zoos in the UK have been closed to visitors due to lockdown restrictions, but are currently scheduled to reopen on April 12.
