A 60-meter-long drawing of a girl carrying water was carved into a beach in Whitby, England as a comment on climate change and water insecurity.

The image was meant to be temporary and was eventually washed away by the ocean's waves.

"Interspersed in the drawing is cracked earth to symbolize the drought that climate change will cause," Jamie Wardley, one of the artists involved with the project, told AFP.

"And then the metaphor, if you like, is the sea is coming in. The rising tide is the rising sea levels that we're going to face in the future."

It was created by artists from the Sand In Your Eye collective and the charity WaterAid to mark World Water Day, celebrated on March 22.

The day is organized by the United Nations (UN) and is meant to bring awareness to water insecurity, a problem that is getting worse because of climate change.

By 2040, one in four children could be living in areas with severe water shortages because of climate change, according to the UN.
