New Zealand is famous for its beautiful coastlines and abundant sea life – but dredging has severely depleted and, in some cases, wiped out its mussel beds.

Searching for a way to rejuvenate the beds, scientists at the University of Auckland and local communities hit upon a radical solution – dropping empty shells onto the beds to create reef-like structures that living mussels could then bind to.

To everyone's great joy, the process worked and is now generating lots of international interest for its potential to transform other decimated marine areas around the world. RAZOR's Emma Keeling reports.
