The UK's Prince Philip, 99, Duke of Edinburgh, has undergone a successful heart operation, Buckingham Palace has said.

Queen Elizabeth II's husband had surgery at St Bartholomew's Hospital in central London, where he was transferred on Monday. The operation was said to be for a pre-existing heart condition that is not directly related to his recent recovery, due to an unspecified "infection."

He has spent more than two weeks in hospitals since he first was reported feeling unwell at Windsor Castle in late February. He is due to turn 100 on June 10.

Buckingham Palace said: "His Royal Highness will remain in hospital for treatment, rest and recuperation for a number of days."

The royal couple have been married for 73 years. Queen Elizabeth, 94, became monarch in 1952.
