French President Emmanuel Macron has tested positive for COVID-19, the presidential palace said on Thursday, adding he would now self-isolate for the next week.

"The president tested positive for COVID-19 today (Thursday)," it said in a statement, adding he had been tested after the "onset of the first symptoms."

Macron will now self isolate for seven days, in accordance with national regulations. "He will continue to work and carry out his activities remotely," the statement added.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex will also self isolate after contact with Macron, despite showing no symptoms. Castex will be unable to attend the French Senate on Thursday to outline his government's vaccine strategy, his office said in a statement.
