Tens of thousands of people braved heavy rain to take part in the 40th London Marathon on Sunday, including baby Elsie.

Apart from the elite runners taking part in their COVID-secure 19 lap circuit of St James's Park, tens of thousands of others ran a virtual race in parks and lanes near where they lived.

With the help of a special app, runners chose their own 42-kilometer routes. It's one of the few marathons to be held in 2020. London's annual race was postponed in April at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.

In total 45,000 runners from 109 countries signed up to run. Among them was Jimmy Dale, who decided to run around his local park in east London, and push his baby Elsie in a pushchair at the same time.

Usually 750,000 people line the streets of London, between the traditional starting point in Greenwich, all the way to the Mall near Buckingham Palace, with thousands of runners all taking part together.

Shura Kitata of Ethiopia sprinted to win the elite marathon after 19 laps of St James's Park in central London. Kenyan world record-holder holder Brigid Kosgei retained her title in the women's race.
