From Monday, people in England can have a manicure or get a tattoo, as restrictions imposed to reduce the spread of COVID-19 are further loosened across the UK.

In Scotland, indoor shopping centers open on Monday and in Wales, pubs and restaurants are allowed to serve customers, but only outdoors.

In the central London neighborhood of Camden, tattoo studios are again open for business. However, everyone inside the studio must wear a mask. There's also extra cleaning and a health declaration form to fill in.

The owner of Camden Tattoo and Piercing, Ricardo Montero, said regular customers have been calling non-stop since the government made the announcement to allow them to reopen.

Ewan Paterson is their first customer since the lockdown started. It's also his first tattoo.

"I've been able to save up some money during lockdown and I have time because I'm not working, so I can do it," Paterson said.

Under the British government's rules for reopening, tattoos are allowed but some body piercings – in the nose, tongue and mouth – are banned for now.

Montero has owned the studio for three years, but it's been operating in Camden for more than 20 years.

He said: "We had to change the number of people coming into the shop. We used to deal with walk-ins and that's something we stopped. Everything has to be by appointment. We've also spaced out slots more and added the face visor."

Montero is relieved the business is open again, but he is worried about paying the rent.

"As a shop owner, what matters most is the rent and in terms of being able to pay it we didn't get any sort of help," he said. "We are still trying to work it out with the landlord."

Montero said at least half of Camden's tattoo studios haven't reopened and he says without tourists the area will struggle to recover.

Before COVID-19, there were at least a dozen studios around Camden. The area is famous for them and won't be the same without them.
