Italy’s Amalfi coast is missing the thousands of Americans who travel to the idyllic holiday spot each year, while the country as a whole could lose an estimated $2 billion from the lack of U.S. travel.

Although movement to, and around, Europe is opening up, the U.S. is not yet on the list of approved countries for travel from, and for destinations like the Amalfi coast it is proving costly.

"The North American market represents 82 percent of our guests, so we hope this market will be able to recover," said hotel owner Giovanni Capilongo.

While he has all but up given up on this season, he is hoping for a recovery next year - and in the meantime, the industry is hoping that more Italians will decide to holiday at home this year.
