Ukrainian police are investigating the death of politician Valery Davydenko, who was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head, said deputy interior minister Anton Gerashchenko.

Davydenko, a former deputy agriculture minister, ran as an independent in last year's parliamentary election.

"The body of lawmaker Valerii Davydenko was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head," Gerashchenko wrote in a Facebook post, adding that police and prosecutors would investigate all possible reasons behind the death.

The body was found in the toilet of Davydenko's office.

Davydenko, 47, was elected in a single-seat constituency and was not affiliated with any political party, according to Ukraine's parliament website.

In the previous Ukraine parliament, Davydenko was a member of the pro-presidential Pyotr Poroshenko bloc and under the presidency of Viktor Yanukovich, in 2013 and 2014 he was deputy minister of agrarian policy and food.
