For the first time since 2005, four of the five films nominated in the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars are from Europe. Movies from Spain, North Macedonia, France and Poland have all been nominated for this award.
The only non-European film nominated this year was Parasite from South Korea. It was nominated for six Oscars, and is the sixth film to be nominated for both Best Picture and Best International Feature Film.
Joker was the only other film that beat it this year with nine nominations. The other movies in this category: Pain & Glory, Les Misérables, Honeyland and Corpus Christi have received buzz and attention in their own right.
The Spanish film Pain & Glory stars both Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz and explores the choices a Spanish director made in his life. It was also named the best movie of 2019 by Time Magazine.

Les Misérables is the first French film nominated for this category since Mustang in 2016. It is set in the suburb that inspired the classic French novel by the same name and is also based on events that started the 2005 Paris riots.
Macedonian film Honeyland is the only documentary nominated for this category. It is about a wild beekeeper in a remote Macedonian village. It also won three awards at last year's Sundance film festival.
