Germany's chief negotiator to COP25 says China is expected to strengthen its commitments to tackling and responding to climate change in the coming years.
But Karsten Sach pointed out that achieving the targets sets in the 2015 Paris agreement would only be possible if all major greenhouse gas producers, not just China, reduce their emissions.
Sach spoke on Friday, the last scheduled day of the UN climate meeting in Madrid, as officials from almost 200 countries scrambled to reach an agreement, amid growing concerns that key issues may be postponed for another year.
Scientists say big cuts to global emissions have to start next year if the 2015 Paris agreement's goal of keeping global warming at 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) - but ideally 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 F) by the end of the century - is to be achieved.
