Only the best can hope to become an astronaut. And even the people working on the ground to prepare for future Mars missions must excel.

The Austrian Space Forum (OeWF) conducts experiments in the field which will be essential to the human exploration of the Red Planet. 

So-called analog astronauts perform many of these - they conduct ground-based studies in simulated space missions. But to earn their place they must execute multiple tasks which test their physical and mental fitness as well as their psychological strength.

OeWF founder Dr Gernot Gromer ran reporter Emma Keeling through three of them.
