Activists barged into Malta Prime Minister Joseph Muscat's office on Monday demanding he resign. They surprised police and soldiers as they forced their way into the building from a side entrance armed with drums, whistles and flags.
The protest follows an investigation into the 2017 killing of anti-corruption journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Muscat is not directly implicated in the investigation but his chief of staff Keith Schembri was named among those involved or having known about the plot.
Schembri resigned and is under investigation. He denied any involvement in the murder.
"Malta has reached rock bottom. This is not just about corruption, but about political murder," said the activists.
Their action follows demonstrations on Sunday on the streets of Valletta to demand the immediate resignation of Joseph Muscat.
Muscat announced his resignation on 1 December, saying he would step down on 12 January 2020 once the new leader of his ruling Labour party is elected..
