The King of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustaf, has removed five of his seven grandchildren from the official royal house.

The grandchildren, who are all under five years old, will still be considered part of the royal family and will retain their titles of dukes and duchesses.

This removal will mean the five grandchildren – Prince Alexander, Prince Gabriel, Princess Leonore, Prince Nicolas and Princess Adrienne – will no longer take part in official royal duties and will not be entitled to an appanage, a taxpayer-funded annual sum.

The two children of King Gustaf's oldest child and heir, Crown Princess Victoria, will not be affected by this change.

This decision comes a couple of years after the Riksdag, the Swedish Parliament, announced it would be looking into the cost of the royal family.

The royal family was the largest it has been in the past 100 years before this change.

Fredrik Wersäll, the marshal of the realm, told Swedish press on 7 October: "We have a large royal family. If you include the next generation, there are currently 10 people in the line of succession."

He added that the royal family has been talking about this change for years.

Princess Madeleine, one of King Gustaf's three children, wrote a statement on Instagram about the new status of her three children.

"This change has been planned for a long time. Chris [her husband] and I think it is good that our children now have a greater opportunity to shape their own lives as individuals in the future," she said.

Prince Carl Philip, Madeleine's brother, also wrote positively about this change on Instagram.

"We see this as positive as Alexander and Gabriel will have freer choices in life,”he said.
