Around 2,500 climate change activists are camping outside of Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel's office in Berlin. This protest has been organized by Extinction Rebellion, a movement to compel governments to take a firmer stance against climate change through direct action.

"We are protesting to pressure the German government to take urgent climate action. They have to tell the truth about the climate crisis and declare a climate emergency," said Max Hierhammer, a spokesman for Germany's Extinction Rebellion team.

He added that they wanted the German government to create a citizen assembly, a group of people randomly chosen, to create a plan to combat climate change.

The camp will remain in front of Merkel's office until 13 October. This is just one of many protests organised across 60 cities worldwide, including Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid and London throughout the week.

Sara Malm, a 32-year-old activist from Sweden, is one of the activists camping in front of the government building. "I am camping here because we need to make it as difficult as possible for politicians not to act on climate change," she said.

"In the camp, there are thousands of beautiful people joining workshops to experience citizen assemblies in practice.”

The number of campers is expected to rise to 5,000 in the next couple of days.

Extinction rebellion in Paris

Climate change activists occupied a shopping center in Paris on 5 October. Over a hundred people occupied the "Italie Deux," Italy two, a large mall in the center of the French capital.

The occupation was organised by several activist groups in France, including Extinction Rebellion, the yellow vest movement and others.

The protesters went into the shopping center while it was closing and then formed a human chain outside of the building. Customers were then allowed to leave the shopping center.

After taking over the building, activists hung banners that said: "Brulons le Capitalisme pas le petrole" which means burn capitalism, not gas; "pollue consomme et ferme ta Gueule," which translates to pollute, consume and close your mouth; and "Rouen-pas de vente pas de paix," Rouen-no truth, no peace.

This was in reference to the chemical plant fire in Rouen that burnt an estimated 5,000 chemicals. It is unknown what effects those chemicals will now have on the surrounding population and the environment.

The occupiers stayed in the shopping center until 4am the following morning. In London, activists are planning to block several streets in Westminster on 7 October.

This protest is supposed to be larger than the protests in London in April in which several tube stations were shut down by activists.
